Fiddleheads - Spring 2004

Postby streetracer » Wed May 08, 2024 10:45 am

Sugarloaf fiddleheading friends...I went fiddleheading for the first time this spring yesterday in the Farmington area. I thought I was early; however, even though the picking was very good, and it didn't take long to get 5 gal, many had already gone by. Even though we are in a little drought right now, it was still very wet where I went; and I had to wade in the water and some mud to get to several of my good locations, which my yellow Lab loves to do, but me, not so much. The fiddleheads I picked were very healthy looking, despite our recent storms and floods...so, good luck to all of you Loaf fiddleheaders and happy spring picking!

Not sure about the Portland area; but if you are going around Sugarloaf this weekend, you should do very well.

If we can't get salt pork or fat back, we too use bacon...potato salad, rib eyes, and most importantly, fiddleheads, have always been a long standing tradition in our family on Mother's Day!

Yeah, but did you pick and eat some? Wilton is a good area for fiddleheads.

No, not really my thing. But I did think of this thread when I saw them.

I'm guessing, that you also don't eat another tasty, Maine, spring victual, served steaming hot in vinegar and butter...fresh dandelion greens
