12/18 rain storm thread

Postby Pow on the Mao » Mon Dec 18, 2023 6:14 pm

devastating video coming out of sunday river on twitter. someone got video of the moment the CMP culvert to the summit hotel got swept away. looked like an 84"+ pipe, maybe 120. big boi. also fall line condo road washed out with an ADS culvert totally undermined.

video from the Wig shows stoney brook way way over its banks consuming camp road.

video from Matt S shows IRA mtn bridge getting pounded with the railing gone.

Storm is ugly. Suspect we may be on a little island up here for a while. Roads seem to be closed in very direction.

That video of the new barker six is crazy.

If anyone needs stuff checked in on up here I am happy to help. I am on West mountain as think it might take some times for roads to open.

Here is Franklin county EMA map on hazards

Redington Bridge on 27 is out. It survived Irene, it was probably due.

Does anyone know if you can travel from Kingfield to Carriage Road in Carrabassett (Tufulios)? From what I can tell, it appears the road becomes impassable at Redington, however its not very clear if it is passable to the South of Redington to Kingfield. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

The Road is closed at Tufts pond road but they will let you through to get to the valley, the road is pretty bad, washed out by IRA mountain, by the south end of spring farm, in front of tufulios up to Ayottes

One of my co-workers asked me about this past storm and the differences from last December. I told him way more rain, less wind, but also a much much larger area of impact. Last December we got whacked hard with some rain, but then 8 hours of 60+ MPH winds. I was without power for 5 days and I know my neighbors up the road were out for closer to 10 days. I saw truckload after truckload of tree debris being hauled down the road. This year was different, just a crazy amount of rain. I'm just glad there wasn't an arctic blast behind it like last year. That would have been really bad for so many people across Maine that wouldn't have been able to keep their homes from freezing.

I really hope next year we don't get another weather event like this right before Christmas. Three makes a trend.

I was surprised to see Whiffletree opened today after the big rain event. Had they made snow there previously or jus farm some snow from other areas?

We get shit on around this time of year every year. Every year. I have been observing this and waiting for the year where it doesn't happen for decades. I've all but given up hope of that ever coming true. I think at this point it would require the theory of the mini ice age due to low sunspot activity to become reality.

16 is still closed and will be for some time. I have no direct knowledge but have heard February is the time frame.

The washout at Redington has gotten quite messy. Had a friend leave today from the mountain and that spot ate the sidewall on a brand new snow tire

Just got a notification that Rt 16 between Rangeley and Stratton is open tonight. Still some work to do to wrap it up but you can cross the river near Moose Meadows now.
