Bitch of the day: website ethics

Postby Frontface » Sat Jan 18, 2020 12:08 pm

Whoever writes the daily report needs to take :20 and re-read what they have written before they push the "publish/post" button. Too many times there are contradictory statements, incorrect statements, or confusing statements. Here's today's example. Two sentences (in separate paragraphs) that beg the question, when is the snow going to start?

1. "I'm not expecting the flakes to fall until late afternoon or early evening, so we most likely will not see any accumulation on the hill today."

2. "The forecast today is calling for a sunny start followed by snow in the early afternoon."

Which is it? Late afternoon/early evening or early afternoon?

I wish the mountain would treat their website (and its visitors) with more respect and focus first on the accuracy on their information they post. I have railed on this numerous times in the past when the website states that certain trails are open when, in fact, they are closed. I appreciate that the website is primarily a marketing tool charged with increasing the number of people coming and spending money on the mountain. That said Sugarloaf should insist upon true, accurate statements rather than hype and sloppiness (today's offense) as the ethical way to do operate a website.

The amount of typos, syntax errors, copy and paste and grammar fuck ups that these snow reports contain is mind blowing.

Today, Monday, at 7:30am the online report and map shows 33 groomed trails, but WSKI lists over 65 trails groomed. What good is it to guests to confuse them just before they head to the hill?

Just updated the online info to conform with WSKI, but Sugarloaf online info should be correct by 7am to be of use to those planning their day before they go out and get to the mountain. 7:50 is just too late.

and the written report says they hit 50 trails.... meanwhile the website says 83 open trails, while the app says 84.

Or, you could just accept it for what it is - marketing fluff rather than an insider line on the truth. In this era of Fake News, how can anyone take this seriously?

Starting with the snow reporter?

Its supposed to be a report.
And (god I can't believe I'm typing this) its a predictable manifestation of a failed attempt to represent a trail count favoring sugarloaf's concept of geo-mathematics.
So lets not play Shakespeare with the guy.

I now want the snow report to be delivered daily in sonnet form and it better be in iambic pentameter, damnit!

Looked up geo-mathematics. Came away impressed. You nailed it.

As for iambic pentameter, that may be a stretch, but a limerick might be achievable:

It has not snowed for a week
And the next front is decidedly weak
We’re due for a gale
So can say without fail
There’s no way you’ll get to our peak.
